When somebody goes looking for an alternative to a piece of software, it is usually one of two complaints. Either the tool works and the contract does not, or the tool is quietly excellent at a job next door to the one they needed doing.
For AutoSpecs it is almost always the second, and that is worth saying plainly before any list of options, because half the people running this search do not have an AutoSpecs problem at all.
Autodesk picked up Pype in 2021 and AutoSpecs now sits inside Autodesk Forma, which is what Autodesk Construction Cloud is called these days. Its own page is unambiguous about scope: "comprehensive and accurate draft submittal logs in minutes," covering action submittals, closeout items and QA material, with version comparison across issues of a project manual and publishing into a project management platform.
Read as a product description rather than marketing, that is a spec reading engine whose output is a register. Two limits worth knowing before you shortlist it: Autodesk documents it as working on CSI MasterFormat and North American project manuals, and there are two versions, the standalone product and the one embedded in Forma, which do not carry the same integrations. If a complete and defensible submittal log is what stands between your team and a workable week, it does that job well and most of what follows will be a downgrade.
Work out which complaint is yours
Four different frustrations send people to this search, and they want four unrelated answers.
The first is that building the register takes too long. You are a general contractor or a construction manager, you owe a complete list off a 1,200 page project manual, and right now a person is reading it by hand. AutoSpecs exists for exactly this, and swapping it for something else is a lateral move at best.
The second is that the register exists but nobody can find anything. That is routing and status, not reading.
The third is that the register exists and now ninety submittal packages have to be built out of it. That is sourcing and assembly, and a log generator has already given you everything it has.
The fourth is that submittal packages keep coming back rejected, which is a review problem and sits closer to quality control than to either of the others.
Sort yourself honestly before booking demos. Every vendor in this category will happily sell you their step regardless of which one you are standing on, and they will all be able to show you a convincing screen while doing it.
If you want another spec reader
This is a thinner field than the search volume suggests. Reading a full project manual and producing a register somebody will stake a schedule on is genuinely difficult, and the products that manage it credibly are few.
Procore's Submittal Builder generates submittal items from spec sections inside the Procore project, which is the closest thing to a straight swap if your job already runs there and you would rather carry one vendor than two. The real comparison then is Autodesk against Procore as platforms, not one feature against another, and that decision usually gets made several pay grades above whoever is doing the submittals.
Whatever you look at, two questions separate the credible spec readers from the demo friendly ones. Does it survive your actual project manuals, including the scanned addendum somebody faxed in 2019 and the section that was clearly pasted in from a different job. And can a human check a row without reopening the manual and reading the section themselves. A register nobody can verify is a register somebody will quietly rebuild by hand, which puts you back where you started with an invoice on top.
If the problem is routing and status
Procore Submittals covers this: submitter and approver roles, sequential or parallel review, status per item, submittal packages for bulk processing, filtering and export. Forma Build does the same inside Autodesk's own stack, which is where AutoSpecs publishes to anyway. Worth knowing the names moved: Autodesk Construction Cloud is now Autodesk Forma, and what was Autodesk Build is now Forma Build.
Neither is an alternative to a spec reader. They are what a spec reader feeds. Replace one with the other and you have traded a list you did not have to type for a list you do.
If the problem is assembly
This is where most of the traffic on this search actually belongs, whatever people typed to get here.
The register says 08 71 00 door hardware owes product data, and that 07 92 00 joint sealants owes product data, test reports and a color sample. Somebody still has to find all of it, confirm each manufacturer is one the project manual allows, put it in order, attach a cover sheet and transmittal, and send it in the general contractor's format. The list made that work visible and countable. It did not touch it.
Three products take this on, from three directions. Worth holding the shape in mind as you read them: reading the book, finding the documents and building the package are three different jobs, and which of the three a product hands back to you is the whole decision.
Submittal.com, from BuildSite, is a library and assembly tool with two decades of product data behind it. They describe their own approach to the register as semi automated, automation where the user wants it and control where they need it, which is a fairer description of the tradeoff than most companies manage. The same rails carry closeout, so the O and M manuals and warranty books come off the back of work already done rather than as a separate scramble in month eleven.
BuildSync does both halves and sells the building half to subs by name: "Build compliant submittal packages from scratch." It reads the documents, pulls product data from its own database, and assembles the result. The catch is scope. Generation covers mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment, and shop drawing review is stated as outside the product. Their published rejection figures, and the caveat that belongs with them, are in the category comparison.
SubPro is mine, so read the next sentences as a description and not a review. It takes the project manual and produces the register, then goes and finds the manufacturer documents each row needs rather than handing that back to you, out of a library running to more than 400 indexed manufacturers and over 16,000 documents. Those get assembled into the submittal packages behind your own transmittal, with the spec page reference on every row so a reviewer can check a line against the source instead of trusting it, and anything it could not resolve arriving flagged rather than stated as confidently as the rest. A person goes through the package before it reaches the customer. From there it sends, records what came back, counts the days a row has been out, compares addenda against the original sections, and carries the record into closeout. A general contractor can run it for the register and the tracking; a trade contractor can run it for the packages; a self performing general contractor needs both and gets both. The documents leave the system once processing is done rather than sitting somewhere as training material.

The uncomfortable part of this table is that a lot of teams own something from row two, need something from row three, and have been told the difference is a feature gap that the next release will close. It is not a gap. They are separate products solving separate problems, and no roadmap is coming to merge them.
