The category splits on one question

Not which product is best. What it produces when it finishes running. There are four answers on the market, and buying the wrong one is how a team ends up with excellent software and the same workload.

  • A list. Every item the project manual requires, and who owes it. This is the submittal log, also called the register.
  • A workflow. Somewhere to route items, hold reviews, and see who has been sitting on what.
  • A review. A report on a submittal package somebody already built, checked against the project manual.
  • The submittal package. Cover sheet, transmittal, manufacturer product data in spec order, in the format the general contractor requires.

Read the first three rows together

Taken one at a time, several products can claim a row. Taken together, the first three rows are the whole job: read the project manual, go and find the manufacturer documents, build the submittal package. SubPro is the only product in this table that does all three across every division.

The log tools stop at the list

AutoSpecs drafts the register and publishes it. Procore builds the log and routes it. Neither goes looking for a cut sheet, and neither assembles anything. The list is the deliverable.

The assembly tools need you to read first

Submittal.com has a real library and real assembly behind it, and says so plainly: the log is semi automated and you take off the project manual yourself. The reading stays your job.

The closest competitor is bounded by trade

BuildSync reads, sources and assembles, which is the same shape. Its package generation covers mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. Division 08 door hardware and Division 09 finishes are outside it.

The word submittal means two different jobs

Most of the confusion in this market comes from one noun doing two jobs. Which one you owe decides what a tool has to produce for you. Most products in this category pick a side and stay there. A few, SubPro among them, do both halves, which is why the same product can serve a general contractor issuing the register and a trade contractor building what goes back.

Which submittal software builds the actual submittal package?

Submittal.com and SubPro produce the assembled submittal package. Autodesk AutoSpecs produces the submittal log, which is the list of what is owed. Procore builds the log from spec sections, then routes and tracks it. BuildSync builds and checks, within mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. Choosing between them starts with whether you owe the list or the contents.

Is SubPro a replacement for Procore?

No, and they are not the same shape. Procore is the system of record for the whole job, and it sells to specialty contractors as well as general contractors. SubPro is the subcontractor's own record: it reads the project manual, builds the submittal package, then sends it, records the response, counts days out, and carries revisions and closeout. Where the job runs on Procore the submittal still goes into Procore, and SubPro exports Excel so the record carries across.

What is the difference between a submittal log and a submittal package?

The log, also called the register, lists every item the project manual requires and who owes it. The submittal package is the document you send for review: cover sheet, transmittal, and the manufacturer product data in spec order. Log tools read the project manual.
